International Women’s Spread Brought to You by

Brooklyn Library’s Adult Literacy Tutoring Program

This is some of what I learned during last month in Adult Literacy Tutoring. I encourage you to learn more as well.

Sooo I’m not exactly sure what I share on here anymore with my busy schedule. Since April 2022 I’ve been volunteering with my local library to help others with Adult Literacy. It didn’t always start out with them helping guide us with lesson plans for the month. In fact, it wasn’t until January this year that they helped out their tutors in this way.

Obviously, March was Women’s History Month, and the lesson plans in the tutoring program reflected that, but unfortunately I wasn’t around in March to help my students due to a family emergency, and short staffing on one week. On the last full week of March, the tutoring program started their spring break that lasts two weeks.

I did look up all that I could out of the lesson plans that were to be planned for the students as I’m a huge fan of Women’s History Month. During my private studying I found out, we had:

  • a Women’s History week as far back as the late 70’s

  • Women’s History Month since the late 80’s

I learned some women to look out for and why such as:

  • Georgia Douglas Johnson

  • Bessie Smith

  • Augusta Savage

  • and more

I learned more about the 19th Amendment that I previously knew, equality in schools from as early as the early 30’s to present-ish, and women’s health. There were things in both equality in schools and women’s health that I knew and things I enjoyed learning.

Where I can’t share everything with you, I will share what I can.
