Women's History Month: Renae
Meet Renae, a passionate reader, a great leader, and a good friend. π
Kaylyn Gabbert: Your hair is absolutely gorgeous in the Sprints. How often do you dye your hair? And what's your favorite color in your hair?
Renae Elizabeth: Thank you!! This is my first time dying my hair to be honest. I got pink balayage in Dec 2024, had it refreshed in Aug 2025, and that's it. I have pink shampoo that helps to retain the color between touch ups. I'm thinking about going purple next though!
KG: When did you first get into writing? What mediums do you love writing in the most? Like articles, poetry, ect?
RE: I started writing really young — my best friend and I were writing a fantasy novel together when we were in fifth grade, though we never finished it. I got into writing short stories (usually horror/thriller) in high school, and that's when I decided I really wanted to pursue writing. I went into journalism after college, and my creative writing practice has decreased since then unfortunately. That's why I joined BWWG! These days I usually write short stories or slice of life poetry, but I still want to write a novel one day.
KG: It's as if a lot of writers start in fifth to seventh grade. If you were to write a novel, what genre do you think it would be?
RE: Definitely something fantasy/horror/fiction — I like the fantastical side of things. We spend enough time in reality lol.
KG: What do you do for work, and do you like it? If you wish you could have a new job, what would your dream job be?
RE: I'm a newsletter editor at a large media company. I lead editorial strategy and production of our core newsletters and I really do love it. I work with a lot of kind and talented people — my team are the kind of people who geek out over oxford commas and em dashes lol. If I could drastically switch careers, I think I would go into something with wildlife preservation or animal care. I've always loved being around animals and have volunteered at the Prospect Park Zoo with their education department for the last few years to keep that interest alive.
KG: What are some of your favorite wild animals?
Also because women have a bad habit of just approaching and trying to care for wild animals, would you make sure to train first?
RE: My favorites at the Prospect Park Zoo are the pallas cat and the fennec foxes. They're so cute (but feisty)!
I wouldn't say women have a bad habit of approaching wild animals. I know there's a lot of ridiculous people online who don't treat wildlife with the respect it deserves, but not just women. I would definitely train, I'd have to go back to school for such a career swap.
KG: In the media I've seen it's usually women, but remembering back on my road trips with family you're right. It's both. Women just have worse press on it.
Glad to hear you'd train.
RE: Absolutely, that makes sense!
